The Cape Union Mart Hiking Club is an independent hiking club based in Cape Town.
We arrange day and weekend hikes for both members and visitors in and around Cape Town,
the Western Cape, and other parts of South Africa. The difficulty of the hikes ranges from very easy to very challenging and, with
around 120 hikes a year to choose from, every type of hiker should be accommodated.
Our hiking club has over 20 experienced leaders, some of whom have been hiking for over 20 years.
The club was founded in 1991 by Maritjie Odendaal, a then Cape Union Mart store manager
in the Blue Route mall. Maritjie placed an announcement in the store window, which attracted the attention
of the other founding members. Together with Theo Blaauw and Yvonne and George Pattison, Maritjie put together the first programme of 26 hikes.
Others were inspired to join them and Ella Du Plessis, Mark Hawthorne and Mike Lundy have been acknowledged
as honorary members of the club for their long dedicated service as hike leaders.
From these early days, the club has continued to flourish and we currently have over 300 members.
